Here is a list of some of the top Search Engines.

Why is my site not in the Top10? | More About Search Engines | Client Experiences (Good and Bad)
Google is now considered the top search engine. Its good results and easy no-nonsense interface make it very popular. Also offering things like "image search" has made it popular with people who like to search the web for images rather than text content.
Yahoo! is not strictly a search engine, but a directory. They have been around for a very long time and have a unique category structure and many people use it because it was the first search engine they learned how to use and they don't want to change. Yahoo! has also spent quite a bit of money in recent years on TV and radio commercials to keep people coming back to them.
AOL's search was unique until they signed a contract with Google to provide much of their results. The great advantage to having a good ranking with AOL was based on sheer numbers. Since AOL has over 9 million subscribers, many of which use AOL as their search tool, having good placement here could get you a lot of traffic.
MSN has the same advantage that you get with AOL. Since MSN has its own search tool, and a huge user base, having a high ranking with them will also drive traffic to your site.
Alta-Vista was at the top of the pile for search engines until a few years ago. One of the main reasons, was that Netscape used them as the default search tool in their browser, so many people using Netscape would automatically use Alta-Vista. As the number of Netscape users has continued to drop, so has Alta-Vista as a search engine.
About has been around for quite some time, and usually provides a unique group of listings when you search using their tool. Not knowing exactly how their spiders do their ranking, they seem to come up with very good results that are usually very closely related to the search keyword chosen.
